

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean Hooper Wells: daughter, Rena Pearl Wells; sons, Edward Ray Wells (Neena) and Marlin Dean Wells (Misty); grandchildren, Michay Montes (Frankie), Kevin Wells, Kimberly Wells, Leandra Coslet (Danny), Dalton Wells (Stephanie), Cheyenne Wells, and Marlee Wells; great granddaughter, Sophia Coslet; brothers, Arthur (Nikki), Monroe (Jan), and H.E. Wells; sisters. Becky (Carl Embry) Spencer, Diane Easley, Rose Wells, and Zelma (Booter) Fulgham; his aunt Mary Lou Chandler, many nieces and nephews; and long time friends Paul and Joyce Rhodes and their daughters Lori, and Michelle Rhodes, and many Auburn and softball friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Rena Pearl Thompson Wells, his father, Marlin Carter Wells; his stepmother, Opal Kolb Worrells Wells, his two brothers Larry Wells and Russell Worrells and his brother-in-law Price Easley.
Carter retired from the Army after 28 years service during which he served two tours of duty in South Vietnam and tours overseas to Saudi Arabia, Taiwan (Republic of China), and Bangkok, Thailand. He was Commander of the Personnel Security Screening Program Detachment and one of the few enlisted commanders in the US Army. He had 92 Senior NCOs working for him in almost all the states and Alaska and Hawaii. During his time in service his awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, 2 Meritorious Service Awards, President Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, National defense Medal, and the Medal of the Ministry of National Defense (Republic of China).
After retirement, he worked for the City of Anniston as the first manager of the Woodland Park Softball Complex for nine years. He worked with the Amateur Siftball Association for many years as a player, coach, umpire, and commissioner. He was inducted into the Alabama ASA Hall of Fame in 2005. He ultimately became the Alabama State Director for the Independent Softball Association (ISA). The ISA has renamed the Annual World Series Base Burgler trophy in his honor and he will also be inducted into the ISA Hall of Fame at their National Conference this year.
Family will receive friends July 20, 2012 from 6-8 P.M. at Gray Brown Service Mortuary. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on July 21, 2012 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with Brother Rick Reaves officiating. Interment will follow at Anniston Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be his two grandsons Kevin and Dalton Wells, and his nephews Stacy Worrells, Matt Easley, Keith Embry Spencer, Chad Fulgham and Ashley Wells. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Stratton, COE Independent Softball Association (ISA), Hank Hufren, Vice CEO ISA, Larry Nash, Founder of ISA, Pat Adkinson, Former AL ASA Director, Al Murray, AL ASA Director, Bobby Rogers, Former District Umpire in Chief, long time friends Paul Rhodes, Robie Carter, and John Smith, and his nephews David and Johnny Easley.
