

Funeral Services for W.K. “Sonny” Matthews, 84 of Wellington will be Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Gray Brown Service Mortuary with Rev’s. Jeanette Fisher and Hollis Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Edgemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Matthews passed away Friday at his residence.
Survivors include his wife Louise Matthews, daughters Cindy Acker (Robert), Tammy Powell (Frank), step-daughter Gayla Creed, sons Steve Matthews, Phil Matthews (Betty), Todd Matthews (Sonya), step-son Big John Smith (Mary), Sister Nita Strickland, Sylvia Jones, brother Paul Matthews, grandchildren Kenny Kirk (Brook), Josh Kirk (Beth), Jeanie Johnson, Eric Matthews (Emily), Cary Lambert, Gage Matthews, Robby Acker, four step grandchildren, several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Matthews is preceded in death by his parents William Matthews and Hester Fomby, sisters Yvonne Dunnam, Dot Torgerson, brother Marlin Matthews.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Hollingsworth, Senior Men’s Class at Halls Chapel, Bud Conaway and Mutt McGuorick.
Mr. Matthews was a native of Coosa county and a resident of Calhoun County most of his life. He was a veteran in the Korean War and a member of Disabled American Veteran, Halls Chapel Church and Alabenton Genological Society. He was a retired brick mason. He was a loving husband father and grandfather who was selfless, humble and kind.
