Judith Ann "Judy" Smith died suddenly on Saturday, Nov 19. She was born September 20, 1949 in Garnett, Kansas to parents Lois and Ossman P. Graves. She was the loving wife of James W. Smith for 43 years. Judy lived many places as a child - Kansas, Missouri, Oregon and Washington - before moving to Arcata as a teen when her father, a pressman, began work at the Arcata Union.
She graduated from Arcata High in 1967 and married Jim Smith on March 13, 1968 in a McKinleyville church. The couple would eventually move to Eureka and stay there. She had four girls, all who graduated from Eureka High School. She attended numerous local churches, including the New Hope Fellowship. Judy was devoted to prayer and she visited India in 2007 as a member of a mission trip.
She enjoyed gardening, especially taking care of her roses. She liked to cook and collect antiques, but will be remembered most for how much she liked to take care of her family. She was a wonderful mother, homemaker and grandparent who always had time to listen and would drop whatever she was doing to help.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Smith, her daughter Darcy Chown; daughter Sarah Mitchell and son-in-law Harlin Mitchell; daughter Jenny Thomsen; daughter Jessie Smith; sister-in-law Elizabeth Ann Anker and her husband Jim Anker; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Duane Graves.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov 29 at 11am at Pauls Chapel in Arcata.
