Larry Cecil Masten passed away March 15th, 2010 in Hoopa California at the age of 70 years. Larry was a native of Hoopa California and lived there for most of his life. He attended Hoopa Elementary and Hoopa High School. After he graduated he enlisted in the Army where he was a paratrooper stationed in Germany. Larry lived in Oakland California for a short time learning the trade of welding. He also lived in Sacramento California where he worked for the Indian campgrounds for 31/2 years while attending Sacramento State. There he earned a Bachelor Degree in Sociology in 1980. Larry moved back to Hoopa and served his people being elected to the Tribal Council. After that he did many other jobs at the Hoopa Indian Reservations.
“Dunners” as he was affectionately known by his family, was a very kind, loving and giving man. He gave his last dollar or two many times to someone in need. He also opened his home to the many who had no place to live until they could make it on their own.
Later in life he discovered he had hidden talent for making things from the outdoors. Many times you could find him and his sister Nancy (HiHi) roaming the woods behind his house looking for twisted sticks or any other piece of wood that was odd looking. He also liked to work with abalone making Indian jewelery.
Larry is preceded in death by his mother and father, Cecil and Lorencita (Boots) Masten; sisters Lorencita (Gosee) Berry and Carmelita Fambrini; brother Fran Jensen and good friend Joe Masten, Jr. He is survived by his son Daren Masten and Brenda of Diamond Bar, California; daughters Serena Masten and Chip, Kaloni Masten of Long Beach, California, Terry Masten of Klamath, California and Angie of Germany; brother Roger Masten and Andria of Eureka, California; sisters Delores and Bud Clark, Cecil (Honey Bunch) Jensen, Nancy and Gary Redenius, all of Hoopa, California, Marlene and Lou Baum of Anderson, California and very close friend Dave Drake, Sr.
