Floyd Leonard Denney’s earthly life was tragically cut short at the age of 54 on January 1, 2026, in Winston Salem, NC. He was born in West Covina, CA, on December 21, 1971, son of James and Norma. The baby of eight children, he had a large family of three brothers and four sisters. Shortly after his birth the family moved home to NC, settling in Greensboro where Floyd and his siblings would be raised.
Floyd grew up fishing and water skiing at Lake Norman on his father’s boat. Many memories were made going to Myrtle Beach, surf fishing any chance he got.
He still talked about his first car, a red 1968 Chevrolet Nova SS he was very proud of. He loved Duke basketball and NASCAR. He was the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr’s biggest fan with a cherished collection.
Floyd had a knack for drawing, Iron Maiden art being one of his favorite inspirations. He was an avid listener of rock music, with favorites Metallica, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. He has seen some of the greatest live in concert.
He graduated from Southern Guilford High School, Class of 1990. He was known to have a strong work ethic. His working career started with his father’s company, Denney Drywall, in his younger years. He then worked for Koury Corporation for many years and Hughes Furniture later in life.
Despite his struggles and odds stacked against him, he did everything to provide for his young daughter Shaila as a single father. They had a very special bond. They enjoyed spending time together baking sweets and watching her favorite movies & tv show, “How to Train Your Dragon.“
Floyd’s life is a testament that we are not our sins or our worst mistakes. We are all worthy children of God. He is restored now with our Lord in heaven, happy and healthy. He was very loved and will be missed by all of his four children, siblings, and large extended family of many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James (1990) and Norma (2004) Pennington Denney; sister, Robyn Lynn Hurley (Wayne), 2009; brothers, Donald (Don) Elmer, 2016, and Thomas (Tommy) Wayne, 2020.
Floyd is survived by his children, Sara Hope, twins Landon Floyd and Lacie Rae, and Shaila Dawn; brother, James Robert; sisters, Roxanne Seagraves, Pamela Petty (Ron), and Belinda Bullard (Blane).
When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
