Margaret Frances “Frankie” Carter Lawson died on Saturday, January 10, 2015 following one day in the gentle care of Hospice Home in High Point. Frankie was born on January 27, 1929 to the late Dwight Moody “Boots” Carter and Jettie Morton Carter. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Carter.
On April 5, 1947, Frankie married P. L. Lawson, Jr. who died on February 11, 1988. After working in hosiery mills in her early years, Frankie dedicated many years alongside P. L. in their business, Crossroads Curb Market in Thomasville. After P. L.’s death, she continued to successfully run Crossroads with the help of her son, Rick and daughter-in-law, Sandra.
Mama never saw a penny she couldn’t pinch. During the 60’s and 70’s she diligently put back money from her weekly household budget to insure that her children had a college education. Although Mama did not receive a high school diploma, she valued education and wanted her children to have the opportunities that she did not have. Mama was an excellent teacher. She taught her children the value of hard work, honesty and perseverance. For this we will always be thankful.
Until health interfered, Frankie was an avid golfer, spending many days at Colonial Country Club, the beach and other courses enjoying happy days with friends. She was a member of two gin clubs, as well as a group of ten devoted friends known as “The Doe’s”. The group of longtime friends spent a weekend every February at Sante’ Cooper in S. C. at the home of Eunice Rice, playing golf, cards, recalling past adventures and in general, being young girls again. These were blessed times and made wonderful memories for Frankie and friends.
Surviving are sons, Larry (Gail) and Rick (Sandra) and daughters, Debbie Butler and Sherry Lawson-Ingram; grandchildren Jeff (Elena) and Josh Lawson, Ashley (Scott) Hemming, Zack (Cameron and Carson Fields) Butler, Robert (Kelby Lomax) and Derek (Casey) McDaniel, Adam (Whitney Clubb) Lawson and Meghan and McAllister Ingram; great grandchildren Hayden, Holland, Isabella and Madeline; sisters, Aliene Reavis and Fern (Sonny) Hazard and special former sons-in-law Jeff Butler and Thomas Ingram.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 15, 2014 at Archdale Friends Meeting. Visitation will follow on the Fellowship Hall.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at High Point Regional and especially Rhonda and Brenda of the Hospice Home who so sweetly and tenderly cared for our wonderful mother.
Memorials may be directed to The Hospice House of High Point.
