Of Arlington Heights
Catherine R. England (Cathie) was born March 26, 1928 in Detroit, MI to Benjamin and Isabella Davidson. Hard of hearing since childhood, she did not let her disability slow her down. The daughter of a semi-professional soccer player in Scotland, Cathie inherited her athleticism and competitive nature from her father. She excelled in field hockey in high school.
Cathie was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Dental Hygiene and worked in the field until 1967. In 1953 she married the love of her life, Fred England. They settled in the Detroit area and had two daughters, Bev and Barb. In 1967, they moved to Dayton, Ohio. Cathie enjoyed her new career as homemaker and made many lifelong friends in the area.
A job change brought Fred and Cathie to Arlington Heights in 1976, where they spent the remainder of their years. Cathie enjoyed playing golf in the Smilers league at Arlington Lakes Golf Course, bridge in the church league and with the neighbors in Sherwood, and membership in PEO Chapter HN. She volunteered at Northwest Community Hospital and First Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, where she printed and distributed the Chimes newsletter.
Her family was her pride and joy. She loved visiting Bev (Tom) in Sarasota, and being an active part of her grandchildren’s lives who lived close by in Palatine (Abby, Danny and Andy Peterson). She happily attended the many band concerts, track meets and church activities of her grandkids.
Cathie was an excellent cook and is remembered for her homemade soups and pies. Sunday dinners with family were always a highlight and were often followed by Cathie ruthlessly beating her grandchildren in card games.
In 2005, Cathie and Fred moved to a villa in the Luther Village in Arlington Heights, where Fred died just a few months later. Cathie moved to the Lutheran Home in 2015.
Cathie passed away on February 20, 2022 at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights. She is survived by her children Beverly (Tom) Chiotti and Barb (Jeff) Peterson and her grandchildren Abby, Danny and Andy Peterson.
She is preceded in death by her husband Fred England, her brothers Bill and Laurie Davidson and her parents.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Lutheran Home, Northwest Speech & Hearing, PEO Chapter HN and the staff and congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights for all of the loving care, friendship and support through the years.
The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hearing Loss Association of America or the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights.
