Darrell L. Cozad was born on October 15, 1929, to Henry and Nora (nee Eaglin) Cozad. He died on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at his home in Arlington Heights surrounded by his loving family.
Darrell was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. Darrell taught as a high school teacher for 31 years at East Alton Wood River High School. Over that time, he continued his own education and obtained a master’s degree in education.
He was a member of the East Alton Methodist Church where he served the church’s many missions through his involvement in United Methodist Men, lay leader, food share program, volunteering for the Habitat for Humanity by acting as the local chapter’s treasurer, and lead an adult Sunday school discussion group for over 20 years.
Darrell generously gave his time to the church and its members by helping with mowing of lawns, driving to doctor appointments, visiting members in the hospital, and many other needed tasks. As a young person, Darrell enjoyed photography and set up his own dark room for photo development. Another passion in Darrell’s life was baseball and his favorite team, St. Louis Cardinals.
Darrell is survived by his children, Leah (George) Augustyniak and Brian (Linda) Cozad; daughter-in-law, Sheryl Cozad; his grandchildren Lauren Cozad, Breean (Bill) Anderson, Thomas Cozad and Anna Cozad as well as his great-grandchild Gwendolyn. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his spouse of 59 years, Faye Elaine Cozad (nee Brown); his son Craig Cozad as well as his parents. Darrell also preceded in death by his six siblings. Two brothers, Wilbur Cozad and Gerald Cozad; four sisters; Bonnie Vaughn, Jesse Belcher, Wanda Hale and Shirley Carter.
Visitation Friday, October 6, 2023, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Visitation will also be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home, 302 East Lincoln Street, Saybrook, IL 61770 with Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. followed by a Graveside Committal Service at Riverside Cemetery in Saybrook.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity or American Heart Association.
