Dr. Donald B. Cosley was born on January 24,1942, in Chicago, IL to Orvel Donald and Greta (nee Thorstenberg) Cosley. He died on August 26, 2023 due to complications related to leukemia treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX surrounded by his loving family.
Dr. Cosley was a well-regarded Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) in Arlington Heights serving the community for over 50 years in the practice of Podiatry and Foot & Ankle Surgery. He was a 1968 graduate of Scholl’s College of Podiatric Medicine, graduating as valedictorian of his class along with receiving the Faculty Award for highest proficiency in Podiatry & Orthopedics. He also received separate awards for highest proficiency in Scholarship and Podiatric Anatomy. Later in his career, he achieved Board Certification in Podiatric Orthopedics & Primary Podiatric Medicine from the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, a distinction reserved for selected podiatrists who demonstrate the highest level of proficiency, knowledge, and achievement in their specialty area. He was a long-time staff member at Northwest Community Hospital and St. Alexius Medical Center and volunteered his time weekly at local nursing homes providing care.
Dr. Cosley was a lifelong homeowner and resident of Arlington Heights for over 55 years and was active in his two son’s activities while growing up including involvement in the Indian Guides Mosquito Tribe eventually serving as Nation Chief. Additionally, he served over 6 years with the Arlington Heights Youth Basketball Association (AHYBA) as a Vice-President and Equipment & Facilities Director. Dr. Cosley was a lifelong parishioner of St. Edna’s Parish, and if not a regular attendee of services, he did donate money “religiously” to support the church and its efforts to serve those in need.
In what little free time he had, he enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time with family and friends at his lake house at Lake Summerset outside of Rockford as well as vacationing at his vacation home in Naples, Florida. Amongst family and friends he was known as Mr. Fix-It and seemingly had a tool for every need from his tool collection which was the stuff of legends. He often spent his free time doing household projects and fixing things in his never-ending quest to ensure everything was in a proper state-of-the art working order. He had an insatiable passion for information and news and would often pass along articles and stories of interest to those close to him. His groan-inducing jokes will be missed by all…well, maybe, not by all.
Donald is survived by his sons Donald J. (Tracy) Cosley and Christopher M. Cosley; his grandsons Carter and Braden Cosley; his sister Elaine (Thomas) Smith as well as his longtime girlfriend Elisia Cesare; he is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Richard and Rosemarie LaVeau and William and Nancy DiGilio along with several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Darlene Jean Cosley (nee DiGilio) as well as his parents.
