Emil Joseph Hanner, 95, of Marco Island, Florida and Arlington Heights, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2024 at his home in Arlington Heights. Born in Chicago, Illinois on April 22, 1929, he was a 1947 graduate of St. Mel High School. After high school, he attended classes at the University of Illinois – Chicago to pursue an interest in architecture, but ultimately he chose retail department store management. He is an alumni of Harvard University, having completed their Advanced Management Program in 1977. Emil spent all 46 years of his retail career at Carson, Pirie Scott & Co., starting at the age of 14 as a stockboy, becoming the youngest buyer in Carson’s history at the age of 20, and rising steadily through the ranks (with a two-year sojourn in the Army during the Korean War). He finished his career as an Executive Vice President – Real Estate in 1990.
The love of his life was Barbara Andree. Several common family members tried introducing them over the years, so the exact date they became a couple is somewhat in dispute. One family member in particular loudly took full credit for the match, and they were engaged in 1955. They were married at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Chicago on June 23, 1956. Emil and Barbara spent the early part of their married life in Chicago until the birth of Jerry in April 1957, whereupon they moved to Arlington Heights. Always interested in architecture and design, Emil continued that passion by designing homes in Arlington Heights and Spooner, Wisconsin, and becoming heavily involved in store design for Carsons.
Emil was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his son, Gregory; mother, Irma Hanner (nee Wukits) and father, Joseph Hanner. He is survived by his sister, Alice Lamm; son Jerry (Patty) and daughter-in-law Amy Hanner; grandchildren: Amy Ullrich, Jennifer Shonce, Derek Hanner, Alicia Reese (David), Colin Hanner, Caitlin Hanner, Katharine Hanner and Olsen Hanner, and several great-grandchildren, including Kian Shonce and Sebastian Tarr.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois. A Roman Catholic Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00am on September 28, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church, 820 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Interment will follow at All Saints Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum, 720 N. River Road, Des Plaines, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either St. James Catholic Church, 820 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, Illinois 60004 or San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San Marco Road, Marco Island, FL 34145.
