

Francis Evan Westfallof Arlington HeightsFrancis "Frank" E. Westfall was born July 29, 1921 in Lafayette, Indiana to Frank E. and Gurtha (nee Moore) Westfall. He died Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois.Frank participated in the ROTC program at Purdue University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1942. He served in the United States Army, during World War II as an artillery instructor, stationed both at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and in the Philippines. He was discharged with the rank of Captain. After the war he was hired by Swift & Company as a project engineer and moved to Chicago, Illinois. Five years later he accepted a position as the plant engineer for Lanzit Corrugated Box Company in Chicago, Illinois. During his career he became active in the TAPPI (Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industries) organization where he eventually served as a divisional representative and president of the group. In 1964 he moved to Container Corporation of America in Carol Stream, Illinois and relocated the family to Arlington Heights, Illinois from the South Side of Chicago. He retired from CCA in 1986 after helping establish corrugated box company facilities in more than 10 cities throughout the United States. While at Container Corporation he traveled extensively and even made several visits to Columbia, South America where he advised the industry on how to better design their corrugated box scrap systems.During his lifetime he was involved with the Boy Scouts of America both as a scout (attending the First National Jamboree in Washington DC in 1937) and as a leader while his son Bob participated in the Scouting Program. After retirement he became a volunteer instructor with AARP"s 55 Alive program for 17 years and served his last five as a State Coordinator. During his time in Chicago he was active in the VFW. In 2003 he and his wife Joan purchased a condominium at Luther Village Retirement Community in Arlington Heights. While there he served on their board of directors and was treasurer and president of their Woodworkers Club. As a couple they traveled extensively visiting many parts of the world mainly cruising with their livelong friends Bill & Barbara Bensing. Frank was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed growing tomatoes in his gardens and being a "Mister I can fix anything" guy.He is survived by his children Pamela (Warren) Lexow and Robert (Pamela) Westfall; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren (including a set of one year old twins); and twin sisters Judy (Laddie) Foster and Janet (Ron) Calhoun.Frank is preceded in death by his wife Joan (nee Koerner) whom he married May 8, 1943 in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; his parents; brothers Harold and Don Westfall.Visitation Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., 1520 N.
