Dixon, IL
On Orthodox Easter, a day of remembrance and the hope of resurrection, our Dad’s earthly journey ended. His suffering and pain are no more.
Frederick Barr Iwen, a man who lived a full life, was born January 22, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois to Clarence “Swede” and Barbara (Barr) Iwen. He passed away on April 16, 2023.
Fred lived his life in the Chicago area, attended Carl Shurz High School as a swim team varsity athlete and attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and later lived in Franklin Park and Arlington Heights. For many years, he enjoyed good times with his extended family where they all had homes on Lake of Egypt in Southern Illinois. Fred later lived in Fontana, Wisconsin where he learned to fervently love the Green Bay Packers. He and his life partner, Roz Wakem, retired to a historic home in Grand Detour, Illinois. He enjoyed fixing and remodeling homes throughout his lifetime.
As a young entrepreneur, Fred founded Eaton and Iwen, a commercial art studio in downtown Chicago. His talent and leadership made Eaton and Iwen a success which allowed him to provide his family with a wonderful life and opportunities.
During his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf in Grand Detour, Illinois. Fred was an avid reader and prided himself with daily reading of the Chicago Tribune and Wall Street Journal. He also enjoyed reading history books about the United States involvement in military conflicts. He would visit Civil War battlefields travelling in the southeastern United States. He even became a "Kentucky Colonel" in the 2000's.
In his full and active life, he had many friends and experiences. Fred loved to travel and took his family on fantastic vacations. His travels took him on wild safaris, but his passion was to ski the world.
Fred was raised in the church and taught Sunday school for a time. He believed in the Gospel and was baptized. Relying on God’s grace, his family believes they will all be together forever someday.
Fred is survived by his children: Alexandria “Sandie” (Tony) Baca, Phillip (Diane) Iwen, and Lydia (Scott) Benda; his grandchildren Alex Baca, Max Iwen, Gigi Iwen, Camille(Robert) Coltman, Luke (Paige) Benda, Lindsey (Seth) Iverson, and his ex-wives Josephine Carol Moffett and Marianne Erickson.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his beloved life partner, Rosalind Wakem.
His children sincerely thank all the caregivers and friends who cared for Fred these last few years. We have been blessed to know you all.
Although Fred’s physical self is gone, our fond and happy memories remain. We have been blessed to know and love each other. Till we meet again…love endures.
