Born on July 31, 1937, in New London, Wisconsin, Gloria was the eldest daughter of Martin and Selma (Wangelin) Wing. A proud alumna of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, she graduated in 1960. On July 27, 1963, she married William L. Altenberger, in their hometown of New London. After a brief time in Hillside, Illinois, the couple settled in Arlington Heights, where they shared a beautiful life for the past 60 years.
Gloria worked as a Physical Education teacher for a few years before working for many years as an office assistant at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
An avid sports enthusiast who truly "knew the game," Gloria remained a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago White Sox. She found great joy in literature, cinema, and the performances of Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett. Above all, Gloria’s greatest pride was her family, and she was the greatest fan of her children and grandchildren, and all their activities and careers.
She was blessed and always spoke with love of her many friends from St. Peter's, her ‘Bridge” Card group, as well as her long-residing neighbors.
She is survived by her devoted husband, William L. Altenberger; her children, Peter (Jackie) Altenberger and Carrie L. Altenberger; her cherished grandchildren, Allison (Sean) Collins, Amy Altenberger (fiancé Charlie McElvain), Thomas (Rebecca) Altenberger, and Ryan Altenberger; and her great-grandchild, Campbell J. Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gail Smith; and her mother-in-law, Mildred Fuller.
A Memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Peter Lutheran Church, 111 W. Olive St., Arlington Heights, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gloria’s name to Saint Peter Lutheran Church.
