I have known Heinz for 56 years, ever since he visited our family home in Cleethorpes (UK) in 1960..His visit was a great success and since that date hehas been loved by all members of the Hughes familyOthers have commented that Heinz was kind, friendly and generous. He was all of these things and I have particular reason for being grateful to him. He has been the most generous person in my life. In 1966, when I was embarking on an academic career, he heavily subsidized a six week trip that my mother and I made to Canada and the USA. Later, in the 1980's and early 1990's, when I was a frequent visitor to the USA I always made sure that if I was in the USA over aweekend it was spent in the Schmidt household where I would be sure of a warm welcome and would be fed and watered on a grand scale.In the 1980's when I visited for prolonged periods and was engaged in writing projects I even took over Heinz's study.I have often reflected since those days if I would have been as kind and generous towards a visiting brother-in-law as Heinz was towards me, particularlyif that brother-in-law had visited my home as frequently and stayed as long as I did at the Schmidt home. I like to think that I would have lived up to the example set by Heinz but fear that I might not have been up to it. He was truly a lovely, kind and generous man. For those who knew him life will not be quite the same without him. We shall all miss him terribly.

Heinz was wonderful. He was generous, kind, sensitive and loving. And if that's not enough he was also a brilliant raconteur,and we have spent many happy times listening to,and laughing at his stories (actions included) about Meppen.He will be greatly missed. A pity there are not more Heinz Schmidts in todays world

My Uncle Heinz was the most generous and compassionate man I have ever had the great fortune to know. He always put others before himself. He will missed in all corners of the World.God bless you
