Matt & Zuly - My sincerest sympathies and condolences.  I have always enjoyed the stories Zuly shared about your family.  It was clear there has always been an enormous amount of respect and admiration for "Grandpa Hahn".  May you all have comfort in the many memories he has been a part of in your lives and may he rest in peace.

I am in a state of shock, disbelief and complete sadness at Grandpa's passing. He was such a force and his presence so grand, the world feels a bit less without him. He always felt invincible to me, among so many other things. He told the absolute best stories and I will forever wish I could listen to him tell just one more. Grandpa had a passion for many things, his monarch nursey being one of them. There was never a visit to his house that didn't start with him asking if you wanted a shot and a piece of his famous cherry cake, or some other baked good he'd made that day. I'm so grateful to be a part of his legacy and this wonderful family he created with Grandma Joan. I will miss him and love him forever.

When I married his son I got a family like no other. The marriage didn't last, but my father-in-law never stopped caring. He embraced me whenever I visited and we shared so many interesting conversations. When I moved back to the Midwest with my new husband, he greeted Gary with those words that anyone who has ever been at 701 N. Vail heard each time they walked into the house. "You wanna shot?" Gracious, kind, intelligent, a great father, a wonderful grandfather, a man of God and golf. If I interviewed candidates to be my children's grandfather and my grandson's great-grandfather I could never have found a better person. 

I loved that he never stopped learning. Two years ago, when we could safely visit without masks, we arrived on the same day Grandpa was set to let the Monarchs go. He raised them with so much love and care and then he gently set them on the tree and smiled the biggest smile as they flew away to live their new lives. 

On Monday he left his body that he no longer needed and off he flew to heaven. I hope there's golf and shots in heaven.

Uncle Jim was a kind, level headed, and caring man. I always felt it a great honor to call him my godfather. To me he was the model personification of what a Catholic man was supposed to be. Many times when challenged with life difficulties, I pondered how he would have behaved in that situation. As a young boy he gave me a wooden trinket that balanced a belt on the tip of your finger, seemingly defying gravity. I still have it in my top drawer. I’ve always believed he could defy gravity, and now St. Peter will become a believer. God, please grant his soul to his rightful place in heaven.

I knew Jim  Hahn at Northwestern.  He was one of the most decent people I ever knew.  I certainly missed him  when he retired.  My condolences to the family.  Louis Skydell.
