

John F. Welzenbach Jr. was born January 26, 1952 in Port Huron, MI to John F. Sr., and Mary (nee Mugavero) Welzenbach." He died quietly April 28, 2016 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights surrounded by his family.John was the loving husband of Amy (nee Hubbell) Welzenbach for 34 years; proud father to children Becky (Sam Killian) Welzenbach and Ben Welzenbach; smitten grandfather to Alida Jo Killian; loyal brother to Jenn (Scott Taylor) Piel; fun uncle to his his nieces and nephews: Sammie and Jessie Piel , Kelsey (nee McCauley) Garlock, Mathew and Topher McCauley and devoted son to his mother.John is preceded in death by his father.At age 7, John picked up a camera and never put it down. Fifteen years later, he graduated from the University of Michigan Honors College.Blissfully ignorant of the business of photography, he created Welzenbach Productions in Chicago in 1974 and later went on to lead Hot Shots Imaging. He mentored many fledgling professionals one-on-one through his business, as well as more formally as a teacher and presenter with Photo-Expo, the American Society of Media Photographers, the Professional Photographers of America, the Dean Collins Fine Line Program, the Brooks Institute, and as an "Artist in Residence" at Disney World.John was a founder of the Chicago chapter of the Advertising Photographers of America, subsequently its Chapter President, and then National Vice President. He also served on the Photo District News editorial advisory board and wrote a photography column for the Chicago Sun-Times.His work took him from Jamaica to China to Miami to the cornfields of Iowa. His curiosity, adventurous spirit, and commitment to serving people through his art forged paths for him in Mexico, Washington D.C., Uganda, Cuba, and beyond. Passion and profession came together in John"s love for auto racing: he was proud to have attended the Indy 500 more than 40 times, sponsored a Rookie of the Year prize through his business, and shot for the Dale Coyne Racing Team for more than 20 years.A resident of Arlington Heights for more than 30 years, John was an involved member of the community; a longtime Sunday School teacher, Elder, and all-around A/V guy at First Presbyterian Church; and a beloved neighbor and friend.
