Lorraine Vargo passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, just shy of her 96th birthday, at Luther Village in Arlington Heights. Born on September 26, 1929, in Chicago, she was the beloved daughter of the late Henry and Josephine Wydra.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her loving husband of many years, Joseph C. Vargo, and her son, Alan Vargo, who bravely served as an Arlington Heights Police Officer. She was also reunited with her twin brother, Hank Wydra, and many dear friends and family members.
Lorraine's legacy lives on through her children: Chris Gore, Teri Vargo, Joe Vargo, Jim Vargo, and Keith Vargo. She was the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. She also leaves behind her beloved relatives including many cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Known for her positive attitude, warm smile, and caring heart, Lorraine was a beacon of love and support for her family. She balanced a part-time job while raising six children, always ensuring dinner was on the table and clothes were washed. Her life was filled with simple joys, yet she witnessed and adapted to the world's changes over 96 remarkable years.
Lorraine worked as a bookkeeper and doctor's assistant, sharing income responsibilities with her devoted husband. Her strong Catholic faith was the foundation of her life, providing strength and guidance to her family. Even in her later years, she remained largely independent, setting a high bar for all who knew her.
She enjoyed mini vacations with her family to places like Arizona, Alaska, and Niagara Falls. Lorraine was an avid reader, often finishing 2-3 books a month, and loved solving word puzzles to keep her mind sharp. Her favorite celebration drink was a glass of Rose or a strong old fashion with Southern Comfort Whiskey and extra red cherries for effect-Cheers!
The Vargo family deeply appreciates the love and support from friends and family during Lorraine's illness, as well as the exceptional care provided by the staff at Luther Village and Suncrest.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 am on September 26, 2025, at St. Thomas of Villanova, 1201 E. Anderson Drive, Palatine, IL 60074, officiated by Father Chris Kulig and Deacon John Breit. Service information is available from Glueckert Funeral Home at 847-253-0168.
