Mary Elaine Applegate was born November 7, 1922, in East Chicago, IN to Emerson and Helen (nee Homan) Applegate. She died peacefully on December 1, 2018, at JourneyCare Hospice in Barrington.
Mary taught at District 15, Marion Jordan Elementary School in Palatine. After retirement, she took classes at Harper College and taught continuing education ceramics classes, up until the age of 80. Clay became her way to express herself artistically. Her wide body of work is her legacy.
Mary is survived by her sister Nanci (late Sam) Andrew; her nieces and nephews Michael (Debi) Andrew, Sanford “Sandy” (Julie) Andrew, Allison Andrew and David Wilhelm. Mary is preceded in death by her siblings Margaret Wilhelm and Donald Applegate and by her parents.
A Celebration of Mary Applegate's Life will be held from 3 pm to 6 pm, Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Harper College Ceramics Studio, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Building L, Room 126 (lower level), Palatine, IL. Parking Lot 2A. Please RSVP to [email protected] or call (847) 253-0168.
