Norma Jean Simmons (née Traise), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on March 7,1934 , in Chicago, IL, Norma was the cherished daughter of Clyde and Gladys Traise (née Crowell).
A skilled artist with oils and watercolor, a quilter, needlepoint stitcher, pianist, singer, playwright and actress, Norma was a woman of so many talents. With a history of study at the Chicago Art Institute, she enjoyed years of teaching others to paint and often exhibited her works at local art shows.
While her three boys were in elementary school, Norma wrote and performed in the annual theatrical plays put on by the school’s PTA. These were fun original stories often including songs whose lyrics played off of popular music written in part and sung by Norma. In later years, Norma performed with the local community theater group affectionately known as “Parigass” (Park Ridge Gilbert and Sullivan Society). Norma starred in leading roles in several of their productions, and served a term as the Society’s president.
Throughout her life, Norma made friends with virtually anyone she met. Always a smile on her face, she was a ray of sunshine to those around her. Norma will be forever remembered as the most generous, selfless, loving and caring person. Her life was full and filled with so many who loved her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and loving husband, John R. Simmons.
Norma is survived by her dear sons and their wives: James & Annie Simmons, Garry & Sheri Simmons, and William & Markie Simmons; three granddaughters: Samantha and her husband Jonathan Colatorti, Meghan Simmons, Olivia Simmons, and a great granddaughter, Emma Colatorti.
