I met Pat in Honors English freshman year at St. Viator High School. Brother Ruhl seated his class alphabetically, so Pat was in the desk immediately in front of me. We quickly became the best of friends and remained largely inseparable throughout high school and college. In high school, we took many of the same classes, travelled to Germany our senior year with Herr Watts, and both joined the cast in a production of “A Spoon River Anthology” at Sacred Heart, the local girl’s high school, in the hope of meeting some girls. Outside of school we both worked as stock boys at the nearby Walgreens, playing pingpong and golf in our spare time. Pat was simply fun to be around, witty but good natured…and sharp as a tack. He loved history and trivia and was a diehard friend.

When it came time to choose a college to attend, Pat followed his older brother Mike to Marquette University, and I followed Pat. The transition to college is much easier if you have your best friend with you. We roomed together in the dorms all four years, both majoring in Economics and Math. In order to pay our ways, we both joined Navy ROTC in our sophomore year. Our summer cruises took us to Japan, where we tried, but failed, to locate Mt. Fuji. We always attributed that to the signs all being in Japanese and not to our navigational skills (or lack thereof). Pat’s height stood out even more in Japan, much to the amusement of the local population. We both eventually chose not to stay in ROTC. 

As college life came to an end, more changes were in store. Pat went to work for Hewitt Associates and I headed off to graduate school. Pat married Mary Burtle and, a few years later, I married Mary Mueller. We served as each other’s best man. Unfortunately, as is too often the case, we largely lost track of each other, only exchanging Christmas newsletters each year. I wish now that it had been otherwise, but I am thankful to have been blessed with Pat’s friendship for so many years. I could not have asked for a better friend.

Dear Mary, Monica, Brian, Michael, Arthur, and Family,

As the Director of Alumni Relations Emeritus at Saint Viator High School, I offer you the sympathy and prayers of the Saint Viator High School Community.  Know that our hearts go out to you as you begin your journey of grief.  You are in our prayers as you share the stories, laugh and cry, and find ways to celebrate the life of your husband, your father, your brother, and the love you shared.

As I read the heartfelt posts on this Tribute Wall for Patrick describing him as an intelligent and insightful man who will be remembered fondly for 'his "infectious sense of humor, his kindness, and his grace," I was reminded of an adaptation of a reading from the Book of Sirach.
"Let us praise an illustrious man,
faithful to his family and friends, strong in his love.
At peace in his heart and his world,
he has left us his good name, and we recount his life of praiseworthy deeds.
A generous man his good works will never be forgotten.
Among his family and friends remains a rich inheritance born of him….
His name lives on from generation to generation.
We gather to sing his praises.
We proclaim his wisdom and love of life all our days."

We appreciate the fact that you listed Saint Viator in Pat's obituary notice. We want you to know that we are proud to “claim” Pat, as an alumnus.  We will remember Pat and celebrate the fact that he continues to be a member of our community at our annual Alumni Memorial Mass, which will be celebrated in the Saint Viator Alumni Memorial Chapel on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 10 am.  The live-streamed 2023 AMM is available at SaintViator.com in the Alumni section.  

As is our tradition, in October we will order a plaque with Pat's name to prayerfully honor him, along with other deceased alumni from Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary, on a wall in the chapel.  Also, Pat's name will be listed in the "In Memoriam" section of our news magazine, A Lion for Life.

May God’s promise that life is changed, not ended, comfort you!
May the knowledge that your husband, your father, your brother, lives on in your goodness give you peace and hope!

So Sorry to hear about Pat.    I truly enjoyed our time together in Cub Scouts.  He was a great guy.

Mary and family, I am so sorry to hear of Pat's passing.  I went to high school with Pat and had the pleasure of being in a number of classes with him.  Aside from his intelligence and insights, I remember fondly his infectious sense of humor, his kindness, and his grace.  He was quite a character and always made me smile/laugh with a look or a comment he dropped on s many occasions.  I only hope that you were the recipients of this and so much more from this generous man.  He was one of a kind, and I wished I had kept in better contact with him. Mr. Gasey was easily one of the coolest dads on the block. Super funny, super quick wit, and was almost ALWAYS prepared with a dad joke in his back pocket. I know he will be immensely missed, but I do know heaven gained a really really good one.
