He was born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to Firman and Marie (Pfeiffer) Simon. He was one of nine children, all of whom preceded him in death. He enjoyed telling stories about growing up on the farm in Iowa and being part of a small town. He learned to operate a tractor long before he drove a car and walked over a mile to school every day. He watched four of his older brothers enlist in the military, including three who served in combat. Following his graduation from high school, Paul enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served until his honorable discharge in October 1957.
During a blind date in New Orleans, Louisiana, he met his future bride, Agnes Elizabeth. They were subsequently married on October 22, 1955 and shared over 70 wonderful years together. Paul dedicated his life to Agnes and enjoyed going on cruises, hosting birthday/holiday parties and spending time with friends. He loved traveling back to Louisiana and enjoying time with Agnes’s relatives.
Following his military commitment, he found employment related to parts distribution and electronics. He later joined Montgomery Ward in 1966. He subsequently retired as a National Parts Manager after 31 years of service.
Paul was a devoted father to Susan Simon, Robert (Kathleen) Simon, Thomas (Sandra) Simon, Lisa (David) Walter and Julianne (Jeff) Harris. He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Debra Simon. Paul enjoyed attending sporting events with his children and being the sole driver for family vacations. Traveling to Iowa was a family favorite and especially meaningful to him. He was creative to keep his children entertained by putting together swimming pools, building an ice rink in the backyard and a basketball court inside the garage.
Paul was a loving and adoring grandfather for thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and never missed a baptism, graduation, or birthday party. He has been a role model for them sharing his faith, warmth, love of family and sense of humor.
