

Brother Philip D. Kennedy, C.F.A., was born in Trenton, N.J., June 10, 1928, to the late Hugh Joseph Kennedy and Jane Theresa O'Hara Kennedy, and passed away peacefully at the Alexian Village of Tennessee in Signal Mountain, Tenn. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012. He joined the Congregation of Alexian Brothers in June 1946, and thus began a career that saw him serve the Alexian Brothers ministries in Elizabeth, N.J., St. Louis, Mo., and Chicago and Elk Grove Village, Ill. In 1975, he earned a Masters in Public Health (Hospital Administration) from Yale University. From there he went on to a brilliant and successful career as hospital administrator. In 1983, he began his ministry as CEO and president of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. He was elected to several terms on the Alexian Brothers Provincial Council and was active in the Chicago and State of Illinois hospital leadership. He suffered his first stroke in 1997, which ended his career in administration. Brother Philip volunteered his services where possible, and retired to the Signal Mountain Brothers Community in 2005. He humbly accepted care provided at Alexian Inn (assisted living) and most recently at the Alexian Health and Rehabilitation Center. Brother Philip is survived by his sister, Jane Kennedy of Signal Mountain and his brothers, Donald Kennedy of Quakertown, Pa. and Richard Kennedy of Reno, Nev. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maddalena and Charles Pastika Memorial Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Alexian Brothers Medical Center, 800 W. Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village. Family and friends will gather Thursday, May 10, for a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Julian Eymard Catholic Church, 601 W. Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.
