Robert Kupon, lovingly known to family and friends as Bob, was born on December 11, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He was 80 years old.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to his family. Bob is survived by his former spouse Susan Evans; his loving children Austin Kupon and Kasey Smith (Ernest); and his adoring grandchildren Blake Smith, Chase Smith, and Gavin Smith.
Bob proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, exemplifying courage and honor as a helicopter pilot from 1966-1970. After his military service, Bob pursued his passion for education, dedicating himself to shaping young minds as a teacher. His impact on his students extended far beyond the classroom.
Bob graduated from Loyola University with a bachelor's degree and pursued further education, achieving two master's degrees. He went on to have a fulfilling teaching career, starting at Our Lady of the Wayside and soon joining Wheeling High School. Throughout his almost 40-year tenure, Bob's commitment and dedication to education earned him widespread respect among his colleagues and peers.
Outside of his professional life, Bob pursued many passions. He was an active volunteer at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), sharing his love for aviation and inspiring future aviators. He found solace in painting and constructing dioramas, meticulously recreating historical scenes. Bob also loved skiing (while his knees allowed), reading, and watching movies. But above all, he cherished time with his family and friends, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need.
Bob will be remembered for his kind heart, his infectious laughter (and singing!), and his unwavering love for his family, especially his three grandchildren. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home located at 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Visitation will be from 12-2pm with service starting at 2pm. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring his memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Bob's name or to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to support aviation education and honor Bob's legacy.https://www.eaa.org/eaa/support-eaahttps://www.stjude.org/give/memorials-and-dedications/donation-in-honor-of-someone.html
Bob may no longer be with us, but his memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
May he find eternal peace in the arms of the Heavenly Father and in the skies he loved to soar.
