Robert J. Peterson was born on August 27, 1922 in Evanston, Illinois to Ivan and Emily (nee Lange) Peterson. He died Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Moorings Health Center, Arlington Heights.
Mr. Peterson was an accomplished civil engineer. He was proprietor of RJ Peterson and Associates and Northwest Engineering who consulted with the municipalities of Northbrook, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village among many others. A couple of his more notable projects include designing Chicago's Ohio Street Bridge and the civil engineering for the Woodfield Mall.
Robert's academic career took him from Armstrong, Elementary School in Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago, graduating from New Trier High School in 1940, and receiving his Bachelor of Science from MIT in 1944. He served in the Air Force during WW II. Robert was a long-time member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Kenilworth, Illinois. He enjoyed his time as a Boy Scout Troop Leader, SCUBA diving, fling private aircraft, traveling the world, sailing, and became a Master bridge player at 90. Robert was a lifelong summer resident of Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Marcia Ford, and his son, John C. (Martha Hemwall) Peterson; his grandchildren, Maren H. Peterson, Robert (Jennifer) Ford, Kathryn (George) Schafer, and Emily H. Peterson; his great grandchildren, Lily Brown, Addisyn Schafer, William Schafer, Mason Ford, and Graydon Ford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian L. Peterson; his daughter, Nancy A. Peterson; his brother Richard Peterson, and his parents.
Committal Service 12:00 pm, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Rosehill Cemetery, 5800 N. Ravenswood, Chicago, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St. Simon Episcopal Church 717 Kirchoff Rd., Arlington Heights, IL, 60005.
