Of Inverness
Russell Arnold Dahlstrom, age 98, July 1, 1923-November 11, 2021, was born in Rockford, Illinois. His parents were Arnold and Mildred Dahlstrom and he was the oldest of 3 children. The family moved from Rockford to Palatine and then Mt. Prospect when Russ was 5 years old.
He graduated from Arlington High School and went on to the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1942, as a freshman, he joined the Navy and was chosen for officers training in the V-12 program at Tulane University in New Orleans and then was assigned to the US Bottineau. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Civil Engineering Corp. He returned to college at the University of Illinois, completing his degree in Civil Engineering. He then began his construction career with Milburn Brothers Construction Company in Mt. Prospect. He also served 8 years in the Reserves after his active duty in the Navy.
In 1949 he married Carolyn Johnson, who he met while teenagers at Lily Lake Covenant Church. Russ was predeceased by Carolyn in 2019 after 70 years of marriage. They had two daughters, Roslyn and Daun, and one son, Bradley, who they raised in Mt. Prospect and at Northwest Covenant Church, where Russ and Carolyn were charter members. They had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Russ not only excelled at being a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and civil engineer but also found time to serve in many capacities as a lay leader at Northwest Covenant Church. Up until the last couple of months, he was still a participant on the church's Finance Board. He also was a self-appointed landscaper and handyman at the church until the Covid quarantine kept him at home. He served on many institutional boards over the years...three terms on the Evangelical Covenant Board of Benevolence, Chairman of Friends of North Park, and Chairman of the Executive Board of Swedish Covenant Hospital. He was also a member of the IDOT Joint Co-op Committee and the American Concrete Paving Association Board of Directors. Russ enjoyed traveling the world, bowling with the church league, photography, woodworking, gardening, and golf, which he played well into his 80's.
Russ is survived by daughters Roslyn (Jon) Engebretson, Daun (Larry) Geissler, son Bradley; grandchildren Karna (Jason) Lliteras, Brita (Brandon) Overly, Stefanie Geissler and Rusty Geissler, Reid Dahlstrom and Cole Dahlstrom; great-grandchildren, Isaac, Benjamin, and Olivia Lliteras, Hadley, Graham and Emmett Overly; brother Warren (Dorothy) Dahlstrom and sister Marlene (Ronald) Magnuson.
