Simon Matthew Oshgan

Simon M. Oshgan was born on July 24, 1923 in Finkenstein, Karnten, Austria to Simon and Anna (nee Koren) Oshgan. He died Wednesday, May 26, 2021 in Des Plaines.

Si lived a rather simple life dedicated to raising a family as the only breadwinner in the family. He served in the US Army in WW2 as a combat photographer with the 3264th Signal Photo Group in the European-African Theater with a Meritorious Unit Service Award. He was a pressman with the Chicago Tribune most of his life and started his career with the German paper, Abendpost, Chicago till 1950 doing rotogravure printing as an apprentice. Si loved feeding his wild creatures outside the house and enjoyed being in his workshop. He loved tinkering with everything and saved everything and made many birdhouses from scrap wood. He loved his cigars and had one with him at all times. He liked to talk about Austria where he was born and about the beauty of the region. Si struggled for years with macular degeneration. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was loved by all.44

Simon is survived by his children, Tom (Cindy) and Skip (Cyndie) Oshgan and Christine (Timothy) Theis; grandchildren, Robert J. (Fiance Athena Campos) and Stephen (Rachel) Oshgan; great-grandchildren, Haley, Parker, Lila and Nora Oshgan, Jasmine and Alex Campos; and many nieces and nephews and especially his niece Rose Rhea.

He was preceded in death by wife of 73 years, Angeline (Buchberger); his parents; son, Ronald Oshgan.

Visitation Saturday, May 29, 2021 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (four blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights, IL 60074. Interment with Military Honors will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
