I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the Hebel family. Tom was such a sweetheart. He really cared about people. I feel really blessed to have shared so many wonderful times with Tom and Susan. He was loved and he loved back.

Tom was the oldest grandchild of the Sisto and Maria DeBiasio clan – a special place in an Italian-American family. He lived up to it. He was tall, handsome, athletic, competitive yet sensitive, big hearted, quick to laugh, highly intelligent and a very caring man. He was easy to look up to: a role model always. Although he was bigger and stronger than his brothers or cousins, he was never a bully. At first, I thought Tom was going to be a chemist. In the basement of his family’s house in Deerfield, he mixed together dry silver nitrate and magnesium powder and then added a single drop of water to produce a burst of blinding white-hot flame and copious smoke. As the smoke permeated upstairs, his mother would come to the door and ask what was going on down there? “Nothing mother” (never ma or mom, always ‘mother’), was the reply that would keep her from coming down to investigate (I think she really didn’t want to know). He also taught me how to make gun powder (75% potassium nitrate, 15% powdered charcoal and 10% sulfur). These very practical chemistry lessons first got me interested in science. He produced his own Mission Impossible movies based on the classic Peter Graves 1966 television series. The movies starring himself, his brothers and friends. They started with the iconic tape-recorded mission briefing and of course the self-destructing tape after 5 seconds. There was plenty of pyrotechnics, alarm short circuiting and eavesdropping equipment featured. They were brilliant! When I was a freshman in high school, he bought me my first LP album (vinyl, kids) as a Christmas present – Tarkus by Emerson Lake and Palmer. I had never heard of them. I played that record until it was scratched and skipped. ELP songs still play in my head sometimes and I think of Tom whenever they do. When Tom was in college and I was still in high school he let me borrow his camera and taught me cut and paste (literally) super film editing for a high school class project. The film was terrible but it was great experience. Tom spent his career producing videos so if a family video needed to be made, Tom would do it. He spliced together all the 8 mm film our grandfather and his dad produced at DeBiasio trips to Italy and Christmases and graciously distributed it to us on VCR tape. He recently produced great shows for son’s weddings. He leaves behind a permanent record of family events we are thankful for. I am grateful for the memories at all the weddings. Tom was a groomsman at my own wedding. The wonderful picture in my mind’s eye of Tom at Steve and Amy’s, Elle and Dan’s and Corey and Mary’s weddings pushes away the gloomy thought of a sad and colorless world without Tom. We will miss him.

R.I.P. Tom. A suave and debonair gentleman, the most talented (in my opinion) SIU R&T graduate of the seventies. So many of us looked up to you.

My name is Steve Van Liere. Tom was my brother-in-law. My oldest sister Sue’s husband. I was fortunate to meet Tom when he and Sue first started dating. I knew from the way he treated me – his new gal’s little brother – that he was a good man – kind, smart, fun-loving, and hilarious. When I moved from Michigan to California, every trip home, usually twice a year, started with a visit with Sue and Tom in Chicago, then Buffalo Grove. I had great timing – visiting Sue and Tom and my new nephews, Stevie and Cory, shortly after each was born. Later, when my Susan and I got married, and had our kids Carly and John, we were ALL welcomed into Sue and Tom’s home – every single trip. Some of my favorite memories: •Staying up late to watch Sports Center together (although he had a preference for the CNN version) •The boat in Saugatuck (and occasionally South Haven) •Staying together in a house on Maui for brother Tim and Jeannine’s wedding •The VIP seats at the Air Show in Chicago in the summer •Lou Malnatti’s with an insider connection to the staff! •Interesting and intelligent conversations about anything and everything •Drinking malbec on the porch in Tampa But, what stands out most to me as I reflect on those times, is that I was always as excited to see Tom as I was to see my own brothers & sisters. He was always so welcoming, so gracious, so honest, so fun. Obviously he loved my sister, but with Tom, I always felt like he loved and cared for all of us – my parents and brothers and sisters, as if we were his own flesh and blood. We were all so very lucky to have him in our lives. We all will miss him terribly. But truthfully, it’s almost impossible not to smile when thinking of Tom because he always made everyone around him smile and laugh.
