Hank Holt family,

I work at the MWRD (computer from '79) until Hank’s retirement. I was in the Computer Department, & typically interacted with Hank on a weekly professional basis.  Hank, great sense of humor, yet very professional. 

Hank & Cheryl friends were Bob & Coleen Bzdek, Initially Bob was my supervisor. Bob stated for Finance Department contacts: Hank, Liz S, Paul T. &  Bob F . Government finance systems are octopuses!

I recall Hank & Cheryl and I attended the Annual Government Finance Offers Association (GFOA) conference (Nashville). There was a ½ day excursion. I was interested in the local canoe trip, but Hank & Cheryl wanted to bike ride. Anyway, I signed the three of us up for the bike ride (honestly).  When we arrived at the excursion mass transport area, somehow we got onto the wrong bus!
10 minutes into the bus ride, I said to the couple in front us “why canoeing? Their reply “we love to go canoeing.” Hank & Cheryl and even I, looked shocked!  

Each canoe had three seats, so we went together.  It was a beautiful day, however, the river was low. We got stuck on many sandbars, with our ores we were able to dislodge. Later we noticed a snake swimming in the river. Then we got stuck on a tree trunk. I had to get in the water, only to find myself in shoulder deep water. I didn’t have a cellphone, however I did have a soggy wallet. To this day, I am not quite sure how Cheryl & Hank got me back into the canoe. 

Hank, as were many of the MWRD staff was an intelligent, dedicated and professional public servant. I have a warm and happy feeling whenever I think of Hank. Thanks to the Holt family for sharing him with us.

Hank and I were friends going back to his DePaul days and we worked together in his early career time before going to the MWSD and also while he was at MWSD.  He was always a great person and devoted husband and father. We had similar experiences as I lost my first wife to cancer after 42 years of marriage. I stayed in Public Accounting and he matured at the District. I spent some time auditing the District and rekindled our friendship and kept contact for many years. Although I have not talked to Hank in many years, I do remember his dedication to always doing great work and caring for family and pets. May he rest in peace and may the family always remember the good times and laughter!  Sheldon (Shelly) Holzman

Dear Bill and Gwen, You have our deepest sympathy in the passing of your dad.  We really enjoyed having him and your mom as friends and neighbors in our neighborhood in Wheeling. Hi Bill and Gwyn,

My condolences on the passing of your dear Dad. I remember your Dad was so funny and he had such a lively and kind spirit. As a kid, I loved coming over to your family parties and tagging along for sleepovers with my older sisters.  I still remember that awesome swing set you had in your backyard in AH. Most of all, I remember the kindness of your family. I wish you peace during this difficult time of grief.

I so fondly remember Hank and I running around preschool at the Glenview Community Church and then on through our school days. One of the smartest and definitely funniest people I ever ran across.

My wife Sandy knew (hate the past tense) throughout the 1970s and 80s talked at extreme length with Cheryl daily. How could they have that much to talk about.

Hanks dear and beautiful children, Biil and Gwen visited us in Scottsdale. I think they thought we were boring, but we enjoyed their smiles and company. 

Thank you, Karen and Gwyn, for helping me through a tough condolence call.  I apologize that you both helped me more than the comfort I could offer you.

At a Trout Unlimited Christmas banquet years ago. Looks like hard at work selling raffle tickets. Always there to help with whatever needed doing. And telling great jokes and stories while he was at it. Miss you.

Dear Holt family,

So sorry for your loss. I worked for many years with Hank at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. He was the nicest man, smart, professional, and funny.   We were all lucky to have known him.
