Lois was born Sept. 9, 1912, to Sherman Frederick Turner Sr. and Della Roth Turner in Oak Park, Ill. She married George Spencer Newell Sr. on May 9, 1936. They had two children, Esther Marie Newell Thurman and George Spencer Newell Jr. She received her B.S. from Northwestern University and was a longtime teacher. She taught at the elementary, high school, and last at the college level. She adored her students and continued to communicate with them long after they had left her classroom. She retired from Texas Christian University at the age of 70. Lois was a longtime member of Travis Avenue Baptist Church and served the church in many ways. But her favorite was rocking the babies in the nursery during the service so the parents could enjoy the worship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Newell Sr.; father, Sherman F. Turner Sr.; and her mother, Della Roth Turner.
Survivors: Her daughter, Esther Newell Thurman; son, George S. Newell Jr.; grandchildren, Ayres Rance Thurman Jr. and Whitney Thurman Davis; great-grandchildren, Taylor Marie Thurman and Ayres Blake Thurman; nephew, Sherman Frederick Turner III and his wife, Suzanne; great-nephew, Alex; and several loving cousins and great-cousins.
