

Tommy Sawyer was born to Alton and Marie Sawyer in Stamford, Texas, on October 8, 1933, and passed away on May 22, 2016 in Arlington, Texas. Tommy graduated from Birdville High School in 1952 where he was the district’s leading scorer in basketball, then attended Tyler Junior College and Texas A&M on basketball scholarships. At TJC in 1954, he met and married the most wonderful and kindest love of his life, Gwendolyn Ann Pietzsch.
Tommy served as a teacher, a coach, and a Distributive Education (CTE) Coordinator in Grand Prairie ISD for 34 years. While teaching and raising a family, he obtained a Master’s Degree from UNT; he was involved in the Noon Lion’s Club, the Hella Shrine, where he was editor of the Camel’s Calf, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He enjoyed officiating high school and college basketball games via the Dallas Basketball Officials Association, and being a judge in both local and national Golden Gloves.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gwendolyn Sawyer, their children: Suzanne Sylvester, William (Mary), Don (Pamela), and Greg Sawyer; and, their grandchildren: Shannon Sawyer, and Russell and Alyssa Sylvester. His wit and his counsel will be missed dearly.
Services will be held at CrossPoint Church of Christ at 11 am, Saturday, May 28th, and memorials will be accepted at the CrossPoint Building Fund: 3020 Bardin Rd, Grand Prairie, Texas.
