Andrew Phuong McGarry, age 24, passed away June 13, 2022 after a long struggle with depression and mental illness. Andrew was born in Dong Nai, Vietnam in April 1998, was adopted and came to the United States when he was four months old. Andrew graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia in June 2016 and also earned an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts degree from The Culinary Institute of Virginia in April 2021.
Andrew enjoyed being in the kitchen and watching cooking shows since he was a young boy. Cooking was his passion and thus, he was a very talented chef. His interest in creating delicious food for others was natural for him and was one of the ways he showed love for those close to him. When he was younger, Andrew was active in Little League baseball in Arlington and in his early teen years he was an umpire for Little League games. He was also a lifeguard at the local swimming pool for four summers. As a young adult, he developed an interest in turbo-charged, manual-shift Japanese cars.
Andrew will always be remembered for his gentle and loving spirit. He leaves behind his brother, Vinnie McGarry, his father Kevin McGarry, ten cousins, nine aunts and uncles and his best friend Martin Romero. Andrew also loved all four-legged creatures, especially his cat Lucy and all the bunnies of the world. He will be sorely missed, forever. A service or commemoration is not currently planned.
