passed away on December 12, 2018 in Arlington. He was born on September 7, 1948 in Alexandria to Charles and Barbara Jeanne Nightingale, and was a lifelong resident of Arlington.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 43 years, Demetra Smith Nightingale; son, Gregory (Caroline); grandsons Lane and Evan; brother, Randall (Kusum); sister, Janet; and many nieces and nephews: Caitlyn, Frank, James, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Joseph, Kimberly, Melissa, Nicolas, Paula, Rebecca, Stephanie, and Stephen. He was predeceased by his father and mother; brothers Charles, Douglas, and Jeffrey; sisters Barbara and Marsha; and beloved nephew Charles.
An artist (oils, pastels, and sculpture) with an enduring appreciation of architecture, historic preservation, and fine arts, Clayton was a dedicated philanthropist and passionate supporter of museums, galleries, house museums, and antiquity sites, particularly those in Virginia, Arlington, and the District of Columbia. He attended George Mason University, where he studied Fine Arts and Art History. Clayton’s art was displayed at various local exhibits, including the Martin Luther King, Jr., Library in DC, the Clarendon Education Center in Arlington, the Arlington Free Clinic, and the Arlington Bicentennial Art Exhibit at George Mason University Law School. He was well known for his sharp wit, sense of humor, mental acuity, sentimentality, and, most of all, his loving devotion to his family.
The visitation will be held from 6pm until 8pm on Monday, December 17, 2018 at Murphy Funeral Home in Arlington. The funeral service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2217 Columbia Pike, Arlington, VA 22204 with a burial to follow at National Memorial Park.
