I first met Don in the summer of 1989 when he and Mom drove up to our home in Benton, IL for a surprise visit. Don and Mom were married the next year on our son Josh’s 11th birthday,  June 2, 1990. I will never forget when they flew to Hawaii for their Honeymoon, and they called me from the airplane as they flew over IL. I had never had anyone call me from an airplane before!  They shared almost 30 years as husband and wife. We shared a lot of good times at either our house or at the Bed and Breakfast in Hillsboro, and later at the Astoria in Arlington. We attended church together often at the First Baptist Church in DC where both Tom & I and they were married. I used to joke with Mom and call her a “Cougar” as she was almost 4 years older than Don. But they enjoyed their life together.  And, they were both pleased when our beloved “Grandtwins” were born on Don’s 84th Birthday. RIP Don!

Rest in  eternal peace, Mr. Pless. It was a pleasure to know you and both your lovely wives.

I share the pain and sorrow of Don, Jr. and Jeffrey at the loss of their father.  My sympathy  and prayers are with them during this sad adjustment period in their lives. 

I got to know Don after he joined the church to which I belonged.  He became extremely active in all phases of church life, and genuinely loved sharing his many talents .  Don helped plan church excursions and SS class activities, which always turned out to be extraordinary.  He was an excellent cook, host, and party organizer.  These contributions were made easier because they were so  appreciated by those who benefited from his labors of love.l  The many, many good memories I carry of Don from those times are treasured.

I didn’t love Don right away, I came to love him over time, as our fleeting contacts slowly became day-long interactions and daily emails or phone calls. Little by little, I drew closer to Don, feeling privileged to be allowed entry to the privacy of his home, his mind, and his soul. As he opened up to me, I did so to him. But loving Don was not easy. He was often quick to anger, to be impatient, to be stubborn. And sometimes so was I. Inevitably, we would lock horns. Yet, neither of us allowed those episodes of discord to last long: we had become so close. Besides, I treasured the other Don, who was witty and caring and awestruck by the wonders of life that often go unnoticed or unappreciated. Don enriched my life so very, very much. I miss him tremendously. 





I can’t find the words to describe how I feel since the loss of my Father. I was with Dad just minutes before he passed.
My sadness , grief and loneliness  are overwhelming.  My Dad loved both of his sons but Donald Jr was somewhat more special to him and I was more like my Mom
In the last several months I would visit and talk with Dad almost daily . I believe we became closer.
It was like we were best friends like never before.
I hopefully will be able to share his life accomplishments later.
Everyone he touched is encouraged to attend his viewing and burial at Arlington     Cemetery on 10/24/2019 at the Old Post Chapel at 11am next to his spouse Hazel who died 1/7/2019
