
Gordon Mitchell Grant (85) Of Arlington, VA, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sept. 29, 2016. Son of Gordon and Beatrice Grant, of Niagara Falls, NY, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; three daughters, Lisa Grant Tillman (Dennis), Laura Grant Welch (Sean) and Barbara Grant Crosby (Rob); five grandchildren, Christine Caviness (Bruce), Sophia and Grant Welch, Alexander and Paul Crosby, and great-grandchild, Victoria Caviness.
Born in Ontario, Canada on Dec. 2, 1929, a Korean War veteran, lawyer and above all, a devoted family man and dear friend to many throughout his life. He received his undergraduate degree at Niagara University, was commissioned at graduation as 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army in 1951. He received his orders to lead an infantry platoon in the DMZ during the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart. After Korea, he attended the Univ. of Buffalo Law School, married Mildred in 1954, earned his law degree in 1956, then moved to Arlington in 1957 to begin a 25-year career with the federal government in energy law.
Mr. Grant served as Secretary of the Federal Power Comm. (now FERC), then left to set up the regulatory Dept. of the Postal Rate Comm., served at the Atomic Energy Comm., and the State Dept. before returning to FERC as Asst. General Counsel for gas. After retiring from government, he worked at Washington Gas Co. in the office of the General Counsel until retirement in 1990. Col. Grant returned to active duty during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He later worked for the American Gas Asso. as special counsel, publishing the annual Regulation of the Natural Gas Industry.
Proud of his Scottish heritage, he served as president of the St. Andrew’s Society of Washington, D.C., and officer of Clan Grant Society. A member of the Military Order of the Carabao, the American Legion, and Washington Golf and CC. The family will receive visitors at Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington, VA, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
