Of Mclean, VA passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Dogwood Health and Rehabilitation home in Orange, VA, after a long illness. She was born on September 2, 1918 in North Arlington, VA to the late John Forrest and Gealie Bunch. She was preceded in death by her husband James Raymond Scott.
Mrs. Scott had a wonderful career after graduating Washington-Lee High School. She attended and graduated from the Washington School for Secretaries. She worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in the 1950''s. In the early 1960''s she was offered a job at General Dynamics as a secretary to Admiral Emory Scott Land, who had been Secretary of the Navy during World War II. This job was the highlight of her working career as she did business with the White House every day. She met and became friends with many interesting people in Washington, such as President John F. Kennedy, Charles Lindbergh, some of the Roosevelts and many more. Hazel loved politics in every form and campaigned on behalf of John Kennedy, Barry Goldwater, and her high school friend from Virginia's 12th district Joel Broyhill.
There was a famous story about Mrs. Scott and JFK. It seemed that "Jack" was visiting her boss one day and she had just been given a Stromberg Carlson radio. She wanted to show it to him. So they went to her office. Well it seems he fell in love with the set. It was a weekend and when she returned on Monday the radio was gone. She was so upset and even more when she learned the JFK had admired it so much, they gave it to him. She raised such a fit about it. When she went home and told her family, they said, "Hazel he is the Presidents of the United States, he can have anything he wants". Undaunted, she complained until they got her a new one.
She leaves behind her daughter, Valerie R. Matei, of Fredericksburg, VA; and her son, Michael S. Scott; as well as many nieces and nephews.
