
Earl was born in Lenoir City, Tennessee to Lynn Russell Copeland and Herbert Earl Copeland. He attended Tennessee Military Institute, spending a lot of time in the Armory. Earl was a U.S. Army combat veteran during World War II, serving in the South Pacific and the Battle of Okinawa. After the war ended Earl remained in the Army Reserves and was called to serve again during the Korean War. He finished his military career as a Master Sergeant.
Earl graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College with degrees in English and Literature, and also attended the University of Havana and Universidad Católica de Villanueva. Earl worked as a UPI reporter and editor in New York, Washington, D.C. and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He enjoyed cooking, gardening and reading.
Earl married Connie Rush on August 2, 1958 at the Church By The Sea in Miami Beach, Florida and during their 58 years together lived in Havana, Cuba, New York, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Arlington, Virginia.
In addition to his wife Connie, Earl is survived by his daughters Lynn (Bryan) and Carol (Roger), five grandchildren, Christopher, Amy, Hannah, James and Ross; and one great granddaughter, Brooklynn.
A graveside service, with military honors will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Friday August 26, at 12:00PM.
To reach the cemetery, take Exit 150B from I-95, to merge on to VA-619. After roughly a half-mile the cemetery will be on your left.
