

Mr. Wehmann was born in Jersey City, NJ, and spent his childhood in Belleville, NJ and Lake Stockholm, NJ. He received his B.A. from the University of Maryland, graduating magna cum laude. He later attended Yale University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and received a Masters Degree in History from Columbia University. Mr. Wehmann also served in the United States Army.
Mr Wehmann joined the National Archives in 1967 and worked there for over 25 years as assistant chief of the Military Reference Branch. He was the author of The Guide to Pre-Federal Records in the National Archives, as well as several articles for the National Archives Prologue magazine. Mr. Wehmann was a member of the American Military Institute, the Society for the History of the Early Republic, and the Manuscript Society. An avid book collector with an extensive historical library, he was also a prolific writer with letters published in many publications including the New York Times.
Mr. Wehmann is survived by his two sons, John M. of Washington, DC and William F. of Pittsburgh, PA and his brother Kenneth of North Grafton, MA.
