Jim Payne went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife Stephanie and his family on June 7, 2025, after a long illness. He was the son of the late Gordon Carter Payne and Pettice Walton Payne of Arlington, Virginia, and was predeceased by his older brothers Carter and Robert Payne. Jim was a graduate of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Randolph-Macon College and Duke Divinity School. He is survived by his nieces Buffy Payne Press and Shannon Payne Kline, and his great friends Tom and Melory Ryan. A funeral service with the Eucharist will be held on Saturday June 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of St. Clement, 1701 N. Quaker Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's name may be made to the Church of St. Clement.
