It is only recently that I heard of Jim's death. I regret that I missed his Mass as I would have liked to have honored him. The comments by his former students reflects the impact he had on all of us. (I was a fellow administrator at FCHS with Jim.)

A great man, falls church wouldn't have been the same without him. He knew everybody and he guided so many.Always walking the halls and making sure you were where you were supposed to be. Great man with a big heart, you will be missed. Kathy Jones, class of 82.

Mr. Powell's greatest joy was making others happy. I remember him saying "Good morning _____" and calling each of us by name. He was so dedicated and positive. RIP Mr. Powell - I always thought you were a fair man. I wonder if you knew how important & influential you were? Lots of students were fortunate to have had such a great example!

I was a senior when I was wait-listed at Tulane University. I was devastated as any senior who placed her hopes on a single school would be. Mr. Powell took it upon himself to try to change their minds. Every Monday morning he would come and get me saying, "Meryl, it's time to make a phone call." We would go to his office and he would call the admissions office asking if they "had room for his girl yet"...the answer was always no, and it never changed. He believed in every young person he met. I will never forget his kindness for that and so many other reasons. He was a dedicated educator and touched so many lives. We were so lucky to have him. Lucky us, lucky me.

Jiim, all your students are right! You are one of a kind, a gentle, loving giant who influenced most everyone you encountered. Who can forget the many years you led the Christmas in April effort for Queen of Peace, repairing the homes of neighbors in need? I look forward to reconnecting!!

Mr. Powell was such a big part of my high school years. It seemed as if he knew each one of us, and what we were going to do next! He was fair and firm. He was truly a light in the swirling storm of the teenage high school years. My sincerest condolences to his family. He is in the presence of our Father.

Wow, Mr. Powell was such a wonderful administrator. He knew all our names, could set us straight and make sure we reached our potential. I really enjoyed my time as a student at FCHS when he was there.

I'm really sorry to hear of his passing, he was a wonderful man. I have many wonderful memories of him  chasing me down when I was trying to leave school grounds, he would just shake his head and tell me to get my butt back to class. He will be truly missed. Rest in peace Mr.Powell

Rest in Peace Mr. Powell. There aren't very many teachers that can be said to have truly made a difference.  Well He was a special man who care so much for his students and because of that he did make a difference.  When I read this I looked at my year book and in it he wrote,"Chris, you are truly special and I wish you nothing but success." Thank you Mr. Powell. Your smile and kind words always made me feel like I mattered.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. His legacy will go on in students that he encouraged to be better than we were. Mr. Powell was a Great Guy. As many did, I use to sneak out for lunch. Mr. Ryan was blocking the exit and writing down tag #'s. Well, I took a piece of paper, wrote HA HA HA!!! on it and covered the tag and almost ran over Mr. Ryan. When I got back from lunch I was called to Mr. Powell's office. I walked in and Mr. Powell said, Robert Brawley, aka HA HA. I said that it was HA HA HA. We both laughed. He said I should suspend you but, it was too funny, so he didn't. Thanks Mr. Powell. I will never forget you. RIP.

Mr. Powell guided me down the right halls at FCHS, kept me out of several jams, and thanks to his encouragement, I was accepted to college and got my degree.  A great man who I owe more than I can give and will never forget.

R.I.P. Mr Powell you have more than well deserved it... He had me in check, he knew I was underwhelmed and bored and encouraged me to go outside of the classroom teachings and find out information on my own. He encouraged my intelligence when my classmates teased me about it. I remember the talks we used to have when he would just pull me into his office just to see how I was doing and always encouraging me to go as far as I could. I remember him poking me in my head and telling "Remember, what you put in here, no one can ever take away!" He was a great man.

So sorry to hear this. I remember him catching me leaving for lunch one day at FCHS and I pretended to be just getting a book out of my car. He was a good and kind man.

Of all the administrators at Fchs, Mr. Powell was by far the greatest!  He was so attuned to the students and adept at influencing choices from the ones you might regret later. 

I remember a powerful, tall, strong man who was gentle and firm and could relate to students. He didn't accept any excuses but he never delivered them either. 

Such a wonderful and important man -- a role model -- to students throughout the years. You will never be forgotten, Mr. Powell. Rest in peace.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Powell's passing.  He was a great administrator and I have such fond memories of him.  I just heard of his passing today, and my sister and I were reminiscing about him yesterday!  Just goes to show how some people you never forget.

I am so sorry for the family of this man. May God grant you peace and comfort in your hearts and strength to face the coming days, months and years. I know this man was very well liked by students and staff alike. As a student at Falls Church High School in the early 80's, I enjoyed talking with Mr. Powell. Mr. Powell was one of a kind and always had the best interest of everyone at heart. He could be hard when needed, but an open ear if one just needed to talk. Mr. Powell was a fine example of what a man is and it reflected into the many lives he touched through his career. Mr. Powell will be missed by many people, but he will never be forgotten.

I attended  Falls Church HS from 1976 thru 1980. Mr. Powell made a difference in so many lives. Sometimes he didn't even say a word...he would just point as though to warn you. He was someone I respected and looked up to and sometimes feared. But all is good...I would not be who I am today. To his family I send my condolences and to Mr. Powell, RIP and thank you.

Dear Powell Family; I was saddened to learn yesterday of Mr. Powell's passing. At that instant I was also taken back in time to a day in 1978 to conversation Mr. Powell and I had that likely saved my life. I also realized that I only shared 4 years with him at Falls Church High School, but his impact on my life as well as other students was far reaching.  I will always remember Mr. Powell's 'firm' love for his students. He was a father figure to many and I will miss him. Please accept my condolences.
