Joan Carmel Marra

Joan Marra of Arlington, Virginia passed away at the Sunrise of Arlington on August 18, 2023 from dementia-related complications. Joan grew up in Port Chester, New York and graduated from Port Chester High School. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University Teachers College and went on to become an elementary school teacher in the White Plains, NY school district. Joan particularly enjoyed teaching her students to learn to read.

Joan enjoyed a variety of activities. Over the years she studied Italian and French, took modern dance and piano lessons, and learned how to play golf. Joan was an avid reader of mystery novels, tackled crossword puzzles, and engaged in recreational writing.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Ann; her nieces and nephews, Ernie, Bart, Annie, Vickie, and John; and numerous cousins. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Marra; her parents, Angelina and Ernest Capeci; and her brother, Dr. Nicholas Capeci.

A direct burial will be held at Columbia Gardens with arrangements made by Murphy Funeral Homes. A special thanks to the staffs at Sunrise of Arlington and VITAS Healthcare for the extraordinary care and consideration provided to her during these past few years.
