John Clarke "Spike" Daniel of McLean, Virginia, passed away at home on April 5, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer. Born October 6, 1953 in Washington D.C. to Grace Hatton Daniel and Clarke Daniel. Spike was a humble and considerate man. He devoted his life to taking care of what he valued most. His family, his friends, the family business, and the community, were all greatly impacted by his generosity. Spike made good things happen. Even upon receiving and absorbing his cancer’s grim prognosis, Spike responded that he had been a very lucky man. He had lived a successful life surrounded by loved ones. Spike approached life with positivity and had a keen ability to live in the moment with gratitude. Spike is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty years, Linda Ede Daniel, his three children, John W. Daniel (Danielle Albert), Jenna C. Daniel (Peter Grimm), and Augustus “Gus” C. Daniel (Natalie Daniel), his sister Lee D.Dettor (Stephen Dettor) along with five nephews and their families in Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Spike has two grandchildren, Dean and Grace, and was thrilled that another granddaughter is on the way. He has extensive family both locally and as far away as Australia. Spike loved them all deeply. Spike enjoyed ongoing accomplishments and earned many accolades. His approach to life was rooted in a strong consideration for others. Spike greatly admired the important role that Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington played in the community. Exemplified by the fifteen plus years spent in volunteer service as a board member, Spike greatly admired the institution and the people who worked there. He was very proud to have been a part of such an excellent facility. While his humble spirit begged to disagree, Spike’s years of expertise and guidance as a managing partner at the family business, Standard Properties, have been integral to its success and its mission of putting family first. Like his father before him, Spike was also passionate about living. He loved good company, great conversation, travel and spending time with friends. His chief passion from a very early age was golf. The sport brought him countless happy memories, very special friendships and more than a few trophies. In addition, he enjoyed many trips to the little island of Bimini, Bahamas with his family, his large extended family and numerous friends. He enjoyed organizing “work parties” as well as planning fishing trips. To have known Spike is to know firsthand that mankind is capable of selflessness, optimism, love and kindness. He is already deeply missed. The family looks forward to a Celebration of Life to be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made to a charity of your choosing.
