

John Andrew Harrington, age 69, of Falls Church, VA passed away on June 15, 2024 at 6:42am. After successfully completing cancer treatments, he caught a viral infection that he could not beat. In his last weeks in the hospital, he was surrounded daily by family, friends, business partners and his favorite music.
John was born in Stuttgart, Germany on August 25, 1954 to Elisabeth Johanna Christina Struve and Thomas Patrick Harrington. His elementary years were spent in Orleans, France and his high-school years in Zweibruken, Germany. He spoke 4 languages- French, English, Dutch and German and even became conversational in Portuguese. He moved to the United States at age 21 and completed his undergraduate degree in International Relations at the University of Maryland College Park. During his college years, he worked part time at a wine and cheese shop in Georgetown, which led to a long and successful 40 year career in the wine business. He retired as East Coast Regional Sales Manager from Trefethen Family Vineyards in December of 2022.
He met his wife, Lucilia, in Georgetown in 1982 and they were married at Dumbarton Oaks Catholic Church in Georgetown on July 16, 1983. Their daughter, Luciana, was born at Georgetown University Hospital on May 18, 1984. They resided in Falls Church, VA as a very tight-knit and loving family of three. They travelled together often to Europe and Brazil and enjoyed going out to dinner together frequently- especially in Georgetown- John’s favorite neighborhood in Washington D.C. John was a dedicated and present husband, father and grandfather. He created many traditions – such as family happy hours- that will continue to be celebrated in his loving memory.
John is survived by his wife (Lucilia Harrington), daughter (Luciana Harrington), grandson (Leonardo John Whelan-Harrington), son-in-law (Benjamin Whelan-Morin), step-daughter (Karen Colling) and her 5 children (Dillon, Jessica, Brooklynn, Ava and Parker), sister (Carole Anne Fuhr and her husband Martin) and her 2 children (Celia and Alec) and nephews (Patrick, William and Christopher) as well as several cousins and other relatives in Philadelphia, The Netherlands and Brazil.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church in McLean at 11am on July 13th, followed by a Reception at Murphy’s Funeral Home in Arlington, VA at 12:30 pm. A Celebration of Life will occur on John’s birthday weekend at his daughter’s residence in Mount Vernon at 5pm on Saturday August 24th.
