Joe McClure had a long and successful academic career, culminating in a Ph.D. and a position as tenured Professor of Physics at Georgetown University. He attended the University of NC as an undergraduate, and Vanderbilt, Rice, and Stanford Universities for graduate studies.
In addition to his physics professorship at Georgetown, he also taught geology, and established and led the Georgetown Women's Volleyball Program for many years. His love of the sport inspired him to later found the Capital Volleyball Club, which helped many young female scholar/athletes obtain college scholarships.
For 15 years during his retirement, he was the beloved guest science teacher for the Science Enrichment and Hands On Science Program at Taylor Elementary School. He loved his work in "kiddie science" and stayed connected with the program until his very last day.
Joe McClure also loved fishing with his dear friend Jeff ( who he could never "out fish"!) and he also enjoyed fishing adventures with his son Jack in Alaska. He explored and hiked in many parts of the world. In his later years, he loved to watch PBS mysteries and eat ice cream with his family, and he enjoyed family beach trips to coastal NC.
In memory of Joe McClure, the family hopes you can find a day to volunteer at your local elementary school. Or, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington VA ( 703-931-9241)
