Cheri was the beloved wife of Dhruba Gupta, cherished mother to daughters Diana and Ginger, proud grandmother (abuelita) to Drake, Owen, Cameron, Garrett, and Olivia, and loving stepmother to Dinu and Dipu. She also devoted much of herself to caring for her adored grandmother (gm) along with her much loved mother (Yolanda) and cherished in-laws in India during their living years.
Born and raised in Mexico, Cheri’s roots remained close to her heart throughout her life. She earned a degree from George Washington University and went on to study at Georgetown Law School, before working in the US Senate and in public service as a legal aid serving the underprivileged. Her passion for learning and research was lifelong, often spending time surrounded by books on history to philosophy to the sciences at the Library of Congress. This passion later turned into the most important research of her life as she became a tremendous self advocate while living with cancer for 18 courageous years. The strongest warrior out there, not giving up as she poured everything into her own research exploring all options with the most positive spirit, until the very end.
During her lifetime, Cheri enjoyed discovering new cultures with her husband, and spending time between their homelands of India and Mexico. Her philanthropic heart and warm hearted spirit had a natural ability to connect in meaningful conversation, drawing in everyone she met. No one was a stranger for long. This extended into her love of animals and her kindred spirit with them. She enjoyed volunteering at the animal welfare league and exploring her creative side with a natural talent for drawing and musical interests in classical guitar and piano.
She is leaving a gravitating mark on this world and will be deeply missed by all the lives she touched. In her memory, the family kindly request donations to one of these two places very close to her heart: Animal Welfare League of Arlington and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support cancer research and patient care. It will rise in perfect light
I have loved the stars too fondly
To be fearful of the night.’
