

Martin A. Thomas, 89, a retired McLean radiologist who served as Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Columbia Hospital for Women from 1972 to 1984, died of complications following a fall at his home. Surrounded by his loving family, Marty passed away on Friday, February 10.
Dr. Thomas began his practice of radiology in Washington in 1961 with Eugene J. McDonald. Eventually, the practice evolved into Washington Radiology Associates with downtown and suburban offices. Dr. Thomas served as president of Washington Radiology Associates, president of the DC Chapter of the American College of Radiology and gave clinical instruction at the George Washington University Medical School. He was instrumental in the introduction of mammography and obstetric-gynecological sonography to this area and published many articles on these subjects. He was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, a member of the American Medical Association and a member of the District of Columbia Medical Society where he served as Secretary and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Thomas was born in New York City but grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was a 1948 graduate of Purdue University and graduated in 1952 from Indiana University School of Medicine. He interned at Indiana University Medical Center and took his radiology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dr. Thomas joined the Navy in 1944 and at the end of the war was in officer training at the University of Nebraska. He joined the Air Force in 1952 and served as a flight surgeon in Harlingen, Texas. After his radiology residency, he served as a radiologist at McDill AFB hospital in Tampa, Florida and at Lackland AFB hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
After retirement from Washington Radiology, he practiced for 14 years at Kaiser Permanente in Falls Church.
In the past years, he was affiliated with all Souls Unitarian Church in Washington and later with the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Arlington. He was a member of Army Navy Country Club and the McLean Photography Club.
He is survived by his loving wife Alice of 66 years; his daughter Debbie Thomas of Arlington, his daughter and son in law, Krista Thomas Amason and Warren Amason of Darien, Georgia, his son and daughter in law, Brian Thomas and Agnes Thomas of Essex Junction, Vermont; grand-daughter Jessica Amason of New York City; grandson and his wife Erik Thomas Amason and Emily Amason of Stuttgart, Germany; grandson Martin Thomas of Essex Junction, Vermont; great grandson Blake Thomas Amason; great grand-daughter Emma Anne Amason; his sister and brother in law Riette and Sid Smith of Bloomington Indiana; step-grand daughter Jennifer Smith and her family Gib, Lucas and Hayden of Purcellville, Virginia.
Private services will be held.
