

Mary Florance Benn, 92, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. A lifelong resident of Arlington, VA, Mary graduated from Washington-Lee High School. Alongside her husband John, she built their home in the Glencarlyn neighborhood, where she lived for the remainder of her years. Mary enjoyed a long and vibrant life marked by devotion to family, service to her community, and a deep appreciation for the arts and adventure.
A woman of deep faith and unwavering independence, Mary was known for her inquisitive spirit and courageous heart. She dedicated much of her life to volunteer work within both her church and the broader community. Her commitment to service was perhaps most notably reflected in her three decades as a Friend of the Kennedy Center, where she shared her love of the performing arts with countless others.
Mary built a distinguished career in the travel industry, first with United Airlines and later rising to Regional Manager at SatoTravel. Her leadership style, defined by kindness and respect, left a lasting impression. She led with quiet courage and dignity, earning admiration throughout her field.
Those who knew Mary remember her as the epitome of class and elegance. Her presence brought warmth and refinement to every room she entered. Whether navigating the complexities of travel logistics or offering words of encouragement to those around her, she did so with poise and compassion.
Mary found joy in many pursuits. She was an avid traveler who embraced new experiences with enthusiasm. She approached life with energy and grace. Entertaining friends and family brought her great happiness—her home was often filled with laughter, good food, and warm conversation. Dining out at restaurants and attending theatrical performances were among her favorite pastimes.
Above all else, Mary cherished her role as a devoted mother and grandmother. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Julie Lee and husband Willes; daughter-in-law Lisa Benn; grandchildren Kate Lee, Jillian Lee, Mathew Carl and wife Katelyn, Russell Carl, John Reynolds Benn, and Gregory Benn. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Barbara; her devoted son Richard and brother William Florance.
Visitation will be held May 16, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Murphy Funeral Home 4510 Wilson Blvd in Arlington, VA. The Funeral Service will be held on May 17 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior Lutheran Church 825 S. Taylor St. in Arlington. Interment immediately following at National Memorial Park 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA.
