Arlington’s leading civic activist died at home on Dec. 9, 2013, after an extended illness. Born in Auburn, NY, and known to his family as “Gary,” Bob is survived by his mother Julia Atkins and cousin Shirley Kubarek of Auburn, NY, cousin Nancy Holden of Indianapolis, IN, several other cousins, and countless friends. Bob’s father Robert and his brother Ronald preceded him in death. Bob obtained his undergraduate degree at American University and a master’s at University of Kentucky. After retiring from the federal government, Bob helped found the Bluemont Civic Association and Virginia Organizations Responding to AIDS (VORA) and represented several groups at the Arlington County Civic Federation. A Log Cabin Republican, Bob also served as the Arlington GOP’s treasurer for 12 years. Until this year, Bob had attended nearly every Arlington County Board meeting since 1995. His memorial service will be held Jan. 4, 2014, 10:30 am, in the Arlington Central Library auditorium, 1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22201. Memorial donations may be made to VORA or the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.
