Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Ellen. He is survived by his children; Anne Woznak (Steven), Carolyn, Andrew (Rushan), Sarah (Melvin Labree) and Patrick (Robert Irey); his grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph, and Katherine Dawson, Megan Rogers (Dean and daughter Adelle), and Elizabeth Woznak; his brother Richard (Mary Anne); and other family members.
Bob was born at home to Lloyd and Carol Scholer Hakes on June 21, 1934 in Stewart, Minnesota. He moved to Washington, D.C., in the early 1940s with his parents and his brother. Bob graduated from McKinley Technology High School in D.C. in 1952, and, after many years of night school, completed a bachelor’s degree from American University in 1969. He served in the Army for a mandatory tour in the mid-1950s, which included a stint in West Germany. Bob embarked on a career of federal service, becoming a second generation federal employee. He worked for the majority of his career as a civilian human resources specialist with the Department of Defense.
Bob met Ellen Garrity while they both were working for the Navy at the old “Main Navy” complex on the site of the present Vietnam Memorial. They married in 1965 at St. Gabriel Church in Washington, DC. Bob and Ellen resided for their entire 40-year marriage in Arlington, VA. He retired in 1989. For much of his retirement, he enjoyed working part time as a dealer exchange driver, which gave him the opportunity to drive new cars and trucks to and from dealerships, and to enjoy lunch at places all over the eastern seaboard. Bob downsized to McLean after Ellen’s death, and lived in a nursing home in Alexandria for the last year of his life.
He was a dedicated member of St. Ann Church for over 50 years. Until his final illness, Bob had volunteered for decades as part of a team counting donations after Sunday Mass.
