
Roberta Louise Hazard, born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 8 November 1934, died in Escanaba, Michigan on March 25, 2017. She was the daughter of Robert Louis Hazard, Sr., of Fall River, MA and Louise Bourget Hazard of Somerville, MA; and the sister of Robert Louis Hazard, Jr., all deceased. A graduate of the Boston College School of Education (1956) and graduate school (1957), she taught American History and Government and Math at Newton High School (1956 – 1960) before joining the Navy in 1960. She served in the Navy for 32 years, attaining the rank of Rear Admiral (upper half) and had the unique honor of becoming, at the time, the senior military woman of the line in any Armed Forces at home or abroad. A specialist in education and training as well as human resources, Rear Admiral Hazard commanded the Naval Technical Training Center at Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA; the Naval Administrative Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA; and the Navy’s largest training facility, the Naval Training Center, Great lakes, IL. She retired in October 1992, having dedicated her energies to the personal growth and welfare of navy members and their families. A 1977 graduate of the National War College in Washington DC, she was a lifetime student and contributor to education. Following retirement she served as member of numerous boards of directors and as an active volunteer. A devout Catholic, she sought to live the motto of her university, “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” (For the Greater Glory of God). She is survived by her sister-in-law, Donna Hazard-Hefler, niece, Carrie Hazard, her nephews, Rob Hazard and Jamie Hazard, her Aunt Connie Davis. She is also survived by several other family members. A visitation was held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, Va. 22203 on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. A service with comital will be held Thursday, November 2, 12:45 p.m. at the Old Post Chapel of Arlington National Cemetery. (Navy Full Military Honors) The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made either to Catholic Relief Services or to any charity that supports needy or abused children.
