Stephen Ward McElvany, 61, died of natural causes at his home in Arlington, VA on April 8, 2020. Born November 13, 1958, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Ward and Alice McElvany.
Stephen attended Calvert Hall College high school in Baltimore and went on to receive a BA in Chemistry from the College of Wooster in 1980 and a PhD in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 1985.
He was a postdoctoral research associate at the Naval Research Laboratory, and continued there as a Research Scientist from 1987 to 1999. He was a Program Officer at the Office of Naval Research from 1999 to 2018, where he was responsible for funding research and development projects on environmental quality.
He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his sister, Karen McElvany Powers (William) of Chapel Hill, NC; niece Katherine Powers of Cambridge, MA; and nephew Brian Powers (Julia Sanders) of Brookline, MA.
No services are planned. A private burial will be arranged in the future.
